Chapter 39
The appearance of Chinese agents out of the blue catches Lewis off guard. Having thoroughly searched his bike earlier, he had been convinced that there hadnât been any more hidden tracking devices. So, how had they found him?
Approaching the turn-off to Peterborough, Lewis has an impulsive idea. If the Chinese have been able to track his bike, then a change of tactics is called for. He would ditch the bike and continue his journey to London by train. He turns off the motorway and follows the signs to Peterborough city centre. Heading towards the main railway station, he passes two police vehicles heading rapidly in the opposite direction. Neither seem interested in Lewis.
Keeping to the speed limit, he soon arrives at the station. Since itâs between the morning and evening rush hours, there are only a few people around. The long-term car park is completely full. For motorbikes, however, some spaces still remain. Lewis weaves his machine into the specially designated parking area and pulls his bike onto its stand. He locks his helmet in the pannier and goes in search of a machine to pay for parking. There is one a short distance away, on the other side of the lot. He meanders in between parked cars towards the payment booth. It turns out to be the kind of machine that requires both a licence plate and a credit card. Both are problematic. If the stolen plate has been, or will shortly become, flagged then keying in the details simply broadcasts where Lewis and his bike are located. Likewise, with a credit card. Deciding not to bother with a ticket, he turns to head back towards where his bike is parked.
Which is when he realises that his luck has run out.
Two black saloon cars have arrived whilst Lewis has been busy with the payment machine. The first has drawn silently to a halt a short distance away. The second, sporting a badly dented front bonnet and bumper, is parked just behind the other. The windows of both have been buzzed down. As Lewis turns, guns are being aimed directly at him.
Four guns, to be precise. Four men and four guns.
This time Lewis has no room for manoeuvre.
